On Thursday September 8, 2022 Queen Elizabeth ll died after 70 years of service to The United Kingdom and other sovereign states. Her reign as Queen began in 1952 at age 25, after the death of her father. During her reign she was a part of the most influential moments throughout world history. From the radio to television, space exploration and even Zoom, Queen Elizabeth was a consistent figurehead through every new technology that our society adopted. The Queen and the Royal family influenced many sectors of the public’s life such as pop-culture, lifestyle, family values, community, politics, and of course royal style and fashion. 

Not only Queen Elizabeth, but many members of the Royal family such as Princess Diana, Kate Middleton, and Meghan Markle have caught the public’s eye with their elegant, sophisticated and posh style. Let’s take a look back at some of the best dressed moments of our favorite royal as we honor Queen Elizabeth in a tribute to her legacy and fashion.

In June 1953, Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor wore a gown designed by Norman Hartnell for her Royal Coronation. It was embellished with national symbols of the UK and other sovereign countries. The gown took eight months of research, design, workmanship, and intricate embroidery to complete. According to Vanity Fair, “The dress is made out of high quality white duchesse satin decorated with a heavily embroidered lattice work featuring floral emblems done in pastel silks and gold and silver thread and embellished with seed pearls, sequins, and crystals.” The dress is estimated to weigh nearly eleven pounds.

In 1961 she wore a full-skirted blue gown to welcome President John F. Kennedy and first lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis during their visit to Buckingham Palace.

In 1967, she attended the premiere of "Doctor Dolittle" wearing a luxurious fur wrap, glistening diamond jewelry and a regal tiara.

During a 1970s equestrian event, we see what may have inspired the character Dolores Umbridge from the Harry Potter movies. The Queen’s pink cape is very similar to that of the Hogwarts professor.

During her 1982 tour of the Solomon Islands she wore a purple ensemble with a matching hat, topped with a collection of feathers. A daring choice for the Queen.

The Queen shocked fans with a sequin-covered "Harlequin" gown for the Royal Variety Performance in 1999. It’s one of her most controversial outfits in the public’s eye, but one of the most beloved among fashionistas.

In 2011 the Queen wore a matching yellow dress, coat, and hat for the Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. She stayed true to her love of pastels to celebrate her grandson’s nuptials.

In 2016 attending the Trooping the Color event, the Queen chose a neon lime-colored coat and hat that went viral on the internet for resembling the color of a green screen. She finished the look with her trademark pearl necklace and matching earrings.
