Designer Fashion Enters The Metaverse

Meta Platform formerly known as Facebook announced that the platform will open an online storefront featuring three major players in the fashion industry. Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne will enter the metaverse, offering virtual designer clothing for avatars on the digital platform. Avatars on Meta owned platforms  such as Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, will have a wide variety of virtual designer clothes to choose from, as well as a growing digital closet as Meta plans to introduce additional designer brands in the near future.

According to the Business of Fashion, “Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has emphasized that fashion will be an important part of the immersive fusion of the physical and digital worlds Meta is trying to build”.

In 2014, popular app Bitmoji introduced the idea of user created personalized avatars to reflect their own sense of style to be used in text messages. In 2017, Apple followed this trend and introduced virtual avatars on iOS, apps, and games, with other apps like Snapchat quickly following the trend.

With an increase in inflation and certain luxury fashion brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Saint Laurent raising their prices in 2022, Meta has a different, more affordable approach to pricing in the metaverse. Clothing and fashion items for sale in the avatar store will start by ranging from $2.99 to $8.99. In a quote to Vogue Business, Zuckerberg said, “We want to create a marketplace so creators, over time, can design clothing and sell it. A lot of the dream is to make it accessible to anyone”.
